Philly Rapper Meek Mill Gets Key to Connecticut and His Own Day
March 21, 2019
Connecticut is on board with the REFORM Alliance. But what was the people’s reaction?
What is REFORM Alliance? The REFORM Alliance movement is centralized around the broken criminal justice system that many Americans seem to fall victim to, eventually to get stuck in a cycle you had no idea was even prevalent until you or somebody else you know, are the prey of the circumstance. With the REFORM Alliance, the group aim to remove outdated laws and policies that keeps citizens behind bars, even after good behavior and attending schooling. They also plan on freeing 1 million from incarceration as well from probation and parole.
Who are some of the major players behind the start-up REFORM Alliance?
Meek Mill is a Philadelphia rapper who became the face of the organization he was made another example of the criminal justice system. He combined forces with other entertainers and sport franchise owners to further execute the new mission. Van Jones, a host on CNN and activist was made CEO of the organization.

As well as other volunteers and investors.Meek Mill gets Key to the City:Right before his concert at the XFINITY theater, in Hartford, CT, on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, Connecticut State Representative, Brandon McGee present Meek Mill the key to the state backstage before hitting the stage. Meek Mill’s now state by state criminal system injustice tour stopped in Connecticut where, it was the third state to have granted the Philadelphia rapper a key to the state.March 19th: Meek Mill Day
Along with receiving a key to the state, he was also honored with his own day, in Connecticut. And Connecticut was the first state to grant him this honor. Houston prior on his motivation tour, granted him his own day and his hometown Philly gave him an entire weekend.
A lot of people who were born and raised in Connecticut their entire lives are very unsettled by this. A lot of talks have been circulating for years now, on how Connecticut and the constituents of the nutmeg state only love and support those on the outside. Or in layman’s terms, Connecticut ride the coattails of everybody instead setting up success for its own people.
On the other hand, there are people from Connecticut who argue the state is divided for no reason because Connecticut doesn’t have much going on for it, which in turn perpetuate the division even more. Some people feel as if what he is doing is more the entirety of the community and people who are disquieted about him getting the key can even benefit from his new reform alliance, seeing that some of them have friends and family members who were wrongfully convicted.
We even have others arguing that Meek only received the key to the state because Brandon McGee is simply using the national trend just to further benefit his political campaign.
Here are a few sentiments that was taken to social media after the news hit main stream media:
“I think we the people should have voted who gets a key but then again what do we care. People getting shot by police in the hood and we worried about a ni**a getting a key.. We all cane together for this fuckry but lil Zoe got slain by the boys and we did nothing!”-Aye Fur
“That’s good for meek n all .. but I feel like it’s another distraction from Hartford period … it’s many activists out here who put on for our city … trying to make a difference in other ways … I get his part in the justice system and tryna be heard and make change … but I feel like they gave it to meek to distract us once again..”-Shanice M.
“Didn’t care honestly, Meek is the guy but I don’t think he deserved a key and a day. Doc Hurley don’t even got a day, they just started talking a statue for ‘holm’ after decades of energy given to Hartford. No ‘sa’, gotta do better. Recognizing Meek’s efforts word have been sufficient.”-Andre C.
